The Martian is a 2015 science-fiction drama film set in 2028, when an astronaut is stranded on Mars and must find a way to survive with little help from Earth. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, Jessica Chastain as Melissa Lewis, Sean Bean as Vincent Kapoor, Michael Peña as Terence "Mitch" Mitchell III, Kate Mara as Johanna "Johanssen" Luo and Aksel Hennie. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard (screenplay), based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name. The Martian was released on November 25th in North America by 20th Century Fox and it grossed $558 million worldwide. The film received critical acclaim upon its release and was praised for its direction, screenplay, scientific realism, and the performances of the cast (particularly Damon's); it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and was nominated for several other awards. 2035: With a crew of six astronauts on board, the Ares III mission is launched to travel to Mars. On arrival, the crew detect a transmission from a nearby Martian outpost: "If you're reading this message, we're dead" and "Don't come back to Earth." Before they can investigate further, an intense dust storm forces them to abort their landing. During the storm, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is struck by debris and lost in the lee of the lander. NASA command center director Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels) decides to leave Watney on Mars to save the rest of the crew, but regains radio contact with Watney, who assures them he is alive. NASA Administrator Teddy Sanders (Jeff Daniels), believing Watney is dead, considers having NASA publicly announce that "the crew died on entry". However, his advisers urge him to keep working on rescue plans because NASA's reputation will be damaged if they give up too early. Watney suffers from dust-induced hallucinations and has a cough that he believes is the result of an alien infection. He manages to start a greenhouse and grows potatoes in order to survive. The rest of the crew, following the suggestion of their contractor, Ares 3 builder John Boone (Sean Bean), find an intact and still functional lander and return to the surface. NASA's own robotics laboratory discovers Watney's location and sends a robot rover called "Hornet" to bring him back; however, Falcon Heavy is out of fuel and will not launch until Monday. Watney is rushed into surgery for his wounds when it becomes apparent that he might not survive another night in the harsh environment. As he lies unconscious, he overhears a NASA team discussing the possibility of "day 0", a day when Earth will have no night and no people on it. After being wheeled back to the lander, Watney awakes and requests some coffee. He pauses as a statement about not leaving until everyone on Earth has been saved plays through his mind, then goes back to sleep. With launch day approaching, NASA attempts to keep Watney's condition secret from the public.
